Before signing up for a Lifetime ISA (LISA) and submitting your details, it’s worth checking the information HMRC holds to make sure:
- Your details with HMRC match the details you submit to Nutmeg
- You qualify for the government bonus
That’s because once you submit your details when signing up, the first thing we have to do is verify your details with HMRC. If we are unable to do so, you will not be eligible for the bonus on your contributions.
How do I know if my LISA application was successful?
When you sign up, we submit your details to HMRC automatically. If this is successful on the first attempt, you do not need to do anything further. If your application is not verified by HMRC successfully, we will get in touch, so look out for a Nutmail.
Why do LISA applications fail?
- Your personal details differ between us and HMRC.
Common formatting examples we have seen have been married versus maiden names registered, hyphenated surnames, or capital letters versus lowercase formatting.
- You have contributed to a LISA with Nutmeg or elsewhere already this tax year.
- You are not eligible (you are under the age of 18 or over the age of 40, or you are not a UK resident).
My LISA application has failed. What should I do?
You will need to check that the details we have match with your details at HMRC. You can see what we have on our records by logging into your account under the profile page.
The quickest way to check the details HMRC have for you is by registering with HMRC online. You’ll need to follow the instructions to set up an account and may need to provide supporting evidence when amending your details with HMRC.
You can also call HMRC on 0300 200 3300 (open 8am-8pm Mon-Fri / 8am-4pm Saturday / 9am-5pm Sunday)
If you are updating HMRC, please let us know so that we know when we can re-submit your details to them.
What details should I check?
- First Name
- Date of Birth
- National Insurance Number
I’ve corrected my details, how do I know if my submission was successful?
First, make sure you let us know when you’ve corrected your details. Then we’ll re-submit your LISA application to HMRC. At that point, lookout for a Nutmail message, as we will get back in touch once we know the outcome.
